I hear something in the distance
A faint sound
A thumping from another world
A heartbeat set afar
I hear a sigh escape into the night
Emancipated fingers reach out from the darkness
Hungry to remember soft flesh
To feel alive once more
I hear the rain falling against the shadows
Trying to wash away the night
To reveal the flavor of life beneath the icing
Of the cake called life
I hear the tears turn to dust
The moisture sucked away
Leaving but tiny pillars of salt behind
Peppering the surface of the earth
I hear the fears of those long gone
The cries of those who remain
Hidden behind a dark curtain
Shadows concealing a wall of reality
I hear the faint thumping in the distance
The heartbeat lost in time
Behind dark shadows
Or our echo slowly fading away in the night
