I was walking down the road and saw a child crying on a
park bench
I asked him why he was with tears
He said his momma sat him down and walked away
I asked him where he lived and he said he didn’t know
He said the house was white and blue
With a big cherry tree in the front yard
Where is your father I asked and he said he never knew
He said his momma told him that he was dead
But his name was Fred
Looking around I didn’t see no one but the boy
The boy, himself and the birds
That didn’t say a thing
I’m hungry he said with a growl his belly
In my pocket I found a mint
And a tarnished dime
I took him by the hand and walked down the path towards my
house
Passing by a man hollering about something he had found
It was a woman’s shoe by the water’s edge
l hear the sirens
screaming as we climbed steps to the top
Opening the door he asked what was my name
Looking down I said Fred and closed the door on yesterday
